Ignition Run/Start Circuit Short To Ground

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Pull the ignition fuse and measure the resistance from the run/start circuit to ground; a very low reading confirms the short

What does it mean?

B1558 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Occupant Classification-ECU ID-Cord Malfunction .

Symptoms

  • Ignition fuse blows repeatedly, sometimes immediately on turning the key
  • Nothing powers up in the RUN position although the battery is good
  • Engine stalls intermittently and is hard to restart
  • Several modules report loss of ignition feed at the same time
  • A burning smell or melted insulation smell from behind the dash in a severe short
  • Passenger airbag status indicator shows the wrong state where the code refers to occupant classification

Likely causes

  • Ignition run/start wire chafed against body metal, most often behind the steering column or where the loom passes a bracket
  • Water in an underdash or underhood fuse box bridging the ignition feed to ground
  • Connector terminal pushed sideways so it contacts a ground pin
  • Ignition switch shorted internally, pulling the run circuit down
  • Loom damaged during a previous radio, alarm or dash accessory installation
  • Module input stage failed and holding the circuit low
  • On applications where this code refers to the occupant classification system, a damaged, wrong or unmatched ID-Cord between the seat and the control unit

How to fix it

  1. Pull the ignition fuse and measure the resistance from the run/start circuit to ground; a very low reading confirms the short
  2. Disconnect the modules that share this feed one at a time and watch the reading, to find which branch pulls the circuit down
  3. Inspect the loom behind the steering column and along its routing for insulation worn through to bare copper
  4. Check both fuse boxes for water intrusion and green corrosion on the ignition feed terminals
  5. Unplug the ignition switch and re-measure to rule the switch in or out
  6. Repair the shorted section, insulate it properly and secure the loom clear of sharp metal
  7. On the occupant classification variant, measure the ID-Cord resistance against specification and confirm the correct seat and control unit parts are fitted and calibrated
