Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Work from the lamp back to the module before replacing any part:

  • BBody
  • 1Manufacturer-specific
  • 6Body
  • 30Sequence number

What does it mean?

B1630 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Right Low Beam Control Circuit High .

Symptoms

  • Right low beam does not light while the left side works normally
  • Bulb failure or lamp out message in the instrument cluster
  • Dark patch on the right side of the road at night and an uneven beam pattern
  • The lamp works intermittently and comes back when the connector is moved
  • On some vehicles the module shuts the output down and both low beams stay off
  • The vehicle fails a lighting inspection

Likely causes

  • Burned out right low beam bulb, or a bulb removed and never refitted
  • Corroded or heat damaged bulb socket at the right headlamp, with melted plastic and blackened terminals
  • Broken or chafed control wire between the lighting module and the right headlamp, often where the harness crosses the front support panel
  • Water inside the right headlamp housing corroding the terminals
  • Short to battery on the control wire, frequently caused by poorly installed auxiliary lighting
  • Faulty ballast, igniter or LED driver where the right low beam is not a plain filament bulb
  • Internal failure of the lamp output driver in the body control module or smart junction box

How to fix it

  1. Confirm the code is current, check the freeze frame data, then switch the low beams on and watch whether the right lamp reacts at all
  2. Remove the right low beam bulb and inspect the filament, then look into the socket for green corrosion, burnt terminals or melted plastic
  3. With the lamps commanded on, measure the voltage at the socket and compare it with the left side
  4. Disconnect the connector and check the control wire for continuity back to the module, then check the same wire for battery voltage that should not be there
  5. Clean the headlamp ground point and test it under load with a voltage drop measurement
  6. Repair or replace the damaged socket, connector or harness section, and reseal the housing if moisture has entered
  7. Consider the lighting driver inside the control module only after the wiring and the lamp are proven good, remembering that a replacement module has to be programmed
