What does it mean?

B2170 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Push Switch (Steering Lock Unit) .

Symptoms

  • Engine will not crank and the vehicle will not start
  • Steering wheel stays locked and will not release
  • Message in the display about the steering lock or the key
  • Key will not turn, or the start button does not respond
  • Intermittent starting that improves when the wheel is rocked
  • Security or immobiliser indicator staying on

Likely causes

  • Electric steering column lock unit failed internally, the most common cause on this circuit
  • Lock pin jammed against the steering shaft because the wheel is under load
  • Switch contacts inside the lock unit worn or contaminated
  • Wiring at the column chafed by the tilt and telescope adjustment
  • Connector at the lock unit loose, corroded or not fully latched
  • Weak battery, so the actuator cannot complete its travel and the switch never changes state
  • Blown fuse or open supply to the lock unit
  • Immobiliser or column lock control module fault after the wiring is proven

How to fix it

  1. Confirm the manufacturer definition and the lock unit location for this vehicle
  2. Rock the steering wheel side to side while starting to relieve load on the lock pin
  3. Test the battery and charging system, low voltage alone can prevent the lock from releasing
  4. Check the fuse and measure supply and ground at the lock unit connector
  5. Watch the lock and unlock switch states in live data while a lock or unlock is commanded
  6. Listen for the actuator operating when the key is turned or the start button is pressed
  7. Inspect the column loom for chafing and the connector for corrosion or a loose lock
  8. Replace the column lock unit and carry out any programming or matching the vehicle requires, then verify the column locks and releases on every key cycle
