Driver Window Up / Down Power Circuit Short to Ground

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Take the door trim off and separate the motor from the harness before deciding anything.

What does it mean?

B2195 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: DTC Detection Logic (Chain of ECM-IMMU) . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.

Symptoms

  • Driver window will not move at all, or moves slowly and stops
  • Window fuse blowing repeatedly, or the thermal protection cutting in after one attempt
  • Burning smell or a hot connector at the door module
  • Express up and down and anti pinch functions lost
  • Engine cranks but will not start, with the security lamp on, when the immobiliser link is the problem
  • Window position needs relearning after any repair

Likely causes

  • Window motor with shorted internal windings drawing excessive current
  • Window regulator jammed, iced up or off its track, so the motor stalls and overloads
  • Loom pinched inside the door boot and shorting a motor feed to ground
  • Water inside the door module or the master switch after a blocked drain or a torn vapour barrier
  • Master switch with internal contamination shorting an output
  • Communication line between the engine control unit and the immobiliser open, shorted or corroded
  • Engine control unit or immobiliser replaced without carrying out the matching procedure
  • Poor ground shared by the door module and the window motor

How to fix it

  1. Confirm the manufacturer definition for this vehicle, the two meanings are unrelated
  2. Disconnect the window motor and measure both motor circuits to ground, a short with the motor unplugged is a harness fault
  3. Operate the regulator by hand with the motor unplugged and check it moves freely through its whole travel
  4. Measure the motor current draw with a clamp meter and compare with specification
  5. Inspect the door boot loom, the door module connector and the vapour barrier for pinch damage and water
  6. For the immobiliser variant, check continuity of the link between the engine control unit and the immobiliser, then carry out the matching procedure
  7. Replace the motor or regulator if the mechanism binds or the motor draws excessive current
  8. Clear the code, perform the window position relearn and verify express and anti pinch operation
