What does it mean?

B2229 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Passenger-side Air Bag Module (Inflator No.2) Circuit Short To Body Ground .

Symptoms

  • Air bag warning lamp on and the passenger air bag deactivated.
  • The passenger air bag second stage will not deploy in a severe crash.
  • The passenger air bag on or off indicator may behave abnormally.
  • The lamp comes on after dash work, a leaking windshield or a wet passenger carpet.
  • The code stores as current and returns as soon as it is cleared.

Likely causes

  • Chafed harness behind the glove box or above the passenger foot well where the loom crosses a bracket edge.
  • Water leaking from the windshield seal, cabin filter housing or air conditioning drain onto the passenger air bag connector.
  • Damaged or partly seated connector under the dash, disturbed during radio, glove box or heater work.
  • Bent or pushed back terminal contacting the connector shorting clip or the module housing.
  • Internal short inside the passenger air bag module between the second squib and its metal body.
  • Trim screws or accessory brackets driven through the dash harness during previous work.
  • Restraint control module internal fault on that loop.

How to fix it

  1. Disconnect the battery and wait the specified stand down time before touching any restraint connector.
  2. Read all restraint codes to see whether the fault is limited to one loop or affects several circuits.
  3. Check the passenger foot well and under dash area for water staining, damp carpet and a wet or corroded air bag connector.
  4. Unplug the passenger air bag module and see whether the code changes to an open circuit; if it does the short is inside the module or its pigtail.
  5. Test only the harness side: measure insulation resistance between each squib wire and ground with the module disconnected.
  6. Trace the dash harness for chafe points, trim screws and pinched sections, then repair with sealed crimped joints.
  7. Cure any water leak first, replace the damaged harness or air bag module, then clear the codes and confirm a normal warning lamp self test.
