What does it mean?
C1106 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: ABS LR Wheel Speed Sensor 2 .
Symptoms
- ABS and stability control warning lamps illuminated
- Rear wheel speed reads zero or fluctuates while the other three are steady
- Stability control intervenes for no obvious reason
- Traction control and hill descent or hill hold features disabled
- Fault sets after a certain road speed is reached
- ABS pulses briefly just before the vehicle comes to a stop
Likely causes
- Water and corrosion inside the sensor connector behind the left rear wheel
- Sensor cable rubbed through against a suspension arm, brake line or exhaust heat shield
- Rusted tone ring teeth, especially on vehicles used on salted roads
- Debris or a metal chip bridging the sensor tip and the ring
- Excessive bearing play or a hub replaced with the wrong part number
- Sensor not fully seated after brake or bearing work, leaving a wide air gap
- Open or shorted section of harness between the sensor and the ABS module
How to fix it
- Read all four wheel speeds during a road test and identify the dropout
- Inspect the connector for moisture and corrosion, and check the terminal tension
- Follow the harness the full length for chafe points, especially near moving suspension parts
- Remove and clean the sensor, then inspect the tone ring for rust, missing teeth or debris
- Measure sensor resistance and output, comparing with the opposite rear wheel
- Check bearing play and correct sensor seating and torque
- Replace the faulty sensor, harness section, tone ring or bearing, then clear the code and road test
