What does it mean?

C1169 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: ABS Hydraulic Valve Power Relay Circuit Failure . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.

Symptoms

  • ABS lamp on, often intermittently at first and then permanently, with the traction and stability lamps
  • ABS switches itself off, so the wheels can lock and there is no pedal pulsing under hard braking
  • Fault often shows up on rough roads, after the engine is hot, or shortly after starting on a cold morning
  • Normal braking is unchanged, but stopping on wet, gravel or icy surfaces takes longer
  • ABS self-test noise at key-on is irregular, missing or repeated

Likely causes

  • Ageing relay with high contact resistance that works when cold but drops out when hot
  • Loose or heat damaged relay socket terminals in the engine bay power distribution box
  • Voltage drop across a corroded high current fuse or its holder
  • Damp, corroded ABS module connector pins giving an unstable feedback voltage
  • Harness section that has hardened and cracked with engine bay heat, breaking down under vibration
  • Marginal charging system or a tired battery, so voltage sags every time the relay and pump load the circuit
  • Internal fault in the ABS control module monitoring or driver circuit

How to fix it

  1. Start with a charging system and battery test, then load test the ground straps; marginal voltage is the most common trigger for this code
  2. Check the freeze frame data for the voltage recorded when the code set, which often confirms a supply problem
  3. Inspect and clean the relay socket and the high current fuse holder, looking for discoloured plastic and dull, pitted terminals
  4. Measure voltage drop across the fuse, the relay contacts and the ground path while the ABS self-test runs, rather than only checking for continuity
  5. Unplug and inspect the ABS module connector for moisture and corrosion, and reseal it properly on reassembly
  6. Perform a wiggle test on the harness with the meter connected to catch a fault that only appears with vibration or heat
  7. If supply, ground and relay are all within specification, the ABS control module itself needs repair or replacement and coding
