What does it mean?

C1189 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: ABS Hydraulic Valve Power Relay Circuit Short to Ground . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.

Symptoms

  • ABS and stability control lamps lit permanently, usually together with the traction control lamp
  • ABS disabled, so there is no pedal pulsing and the wheels can lock on wet, gravel or icy surfaces
  • Recurring blown ABS fuse or a rapid buzzing from the relay area instead of a single click
  • Electronic brake force distribution and hill-start assist stop working, and the red brake lamp may come on
  • Fault sometimes appears only after driving in heavy rain or through standing water

Likely causes

  • Damaged wire insulation where the loom is clipped to a metal bracket, the strut tower or the hydraulic unit
  • Water and salt in the relay box creating a conductive path to the box shell or the vehicle body
  • Relay with an internal short between the winding and its metal frame
  • Loom crushed or trapped by a component refitted incorrectly during earlier repair work
  • Rodent or debris damage to the cable run in the engine bay
  • Corroded ABS module connector where a swollen terminal touches the metal shield
  • ABS control module output driver failed short to ground

How to fix it

  1. Check the ABS fuses first; a blown fuse both confirms the short and tells you which branch of the circuit to inspect
  2. Read the complete chassis code list — several valve or relay codes at once indicate a shared circuit fault, not several bad parts
  3. Open the relay and fuse box, dry it out and look for water tracks, corrosion and carbon tracking before doing any wiring test
  4. With the relay removed and the ABS module unplugged, measure resistance from the relay control terminal to chassis ground; near zero confirms the short
  5. Unwrap and inspect the harness from the fuse box to the hydraulic unit, checking every clip, edge and grommet for chafe
  6. Bench test the relay for a winding to case short and replace it if it fails
  7. Repair the harness with sealed joints, reroute it away from the point of damage, then clear codes and confirm the ABS self-test runs normally
