What does it mean?
C1420 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: Rear Differential Control Circuit Current Performance .
Symptoms
- Differential lock or all wheel drive warning lamp on with the function disabled
- Lock engages slowly, only partially, or drops out under load
- Wheel spin on loose surfaces despite the system being selected
- Clunk or shudder from the rear axle when engagement is attempted
- Traction and stability warnings appear together with this code
Likely causes
- Partially shorted or partially open actuator winding, giving current that is too high or too low
- High resistance from corroded terminals or a poor ground in the actuator circuit
- Mechanically binding differential lock actuator forcing the motor to draw excess current
- Wrong, degraded or contaminated differential fluid causing clutch drag
- Chafed harness at the rear axle intermittently touching ground or another circuit
- Low system voltage from a weak battery or a charging fault
- Control module output driver drifting out of calibration
How to fix it
- Check battery and charging voltage before any circuit test
- Read the commanded versus actual current or duty cycle on live data
- Measure actuator resistance cold and compare it with specification
- Perform a voltage drop test on the supply and ground while the actuator is commanded
- Inspect the rear axle harness and connector for chafe, water and corrosion
- Check differential fluid level, type and condition; burnt fluid indicates clutch drag
- Replace the actuator or repair the wiring, then command engagement with a scan tool and confirm the current is back in range
