First step

Inspect the contactor and its cable terminals for heat damage, corrosion and loose nuts before any testing

What does it mean?

C1862 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: Contactor Circuit Failure .

Symptoms

  • Warning lamp on and the function powered through the contactor not working
  • The expected click is missing when the system should energise, or a rapid clicking is heard instead
  • Operation is intermittent and sometimes improves after tapping the contactor
  • Discoloured terminals or a burnt smell around the contactor
  • Fuse in that circuit blowing repeatedly
  • Function works from cold but drops out once everything is warm

Likely causes

  • Contactor coil open circuit or shorted so it will not pull in
  • Main contacts burned, pitted or welded closed after repeated switching under load
  • Loose, corroded or heat-damaged high current cable terminals at the contactor
  • Open circuit or short to ground on the coil control wire between the module and the contactor
  • Blown fuse or fusible link in the circuit the contactor feeds
  • Poor ground for the contactor coil, so it never fully closes
  • Failed output driver in the controlling module
  • Low system voltage making the contactor chatter instead of latching cleanly

How to fix it

  1. Inspect the contactor and its cable terminals for heat damage, corrosion and loose nuts before any testing
  2. Measure the coil resistance and compare it with specification
  3. Check the coil control wire for continuity and for a short to ground with the connector unplugged
  4. Command the contactor with a scan tool output test and listen and measure for actual actuation
  5. Measure the voltage drop across the closed contacts under load; a healthy contactor drops very little
  6. Check the fuse or fusible link and the ground point in the circuit
  7. Repair the wiring faults, then replace the contactor if the coil or the contacts are out of specification, and replace the control module only if its driver is proven dead
