What does it mean?
Direct injection and common rail systems regulate rail pressure in closed loop: a pressure sensor on the rail provides feedback and the module drives a metering or pressure control valve to reach the commanded target. That loop can only close once the pump has built pressure and the sensor reading is stable and plausible. This code is stored when the system takes longer than the calibrated time after start to reach regulated operation. The delay usually means the pump cannot build pressure quickly, the rail is bleeding pressure back to return, or the control valve responds sluggishly.
Symptoms
- Extended cranking before the engine starts, worse when cold
- Rough running and low power for the first moments after start
- Diesel knock or clatter until rail pressure stabilises
- MIL on, sometimes with a reduced power condition
- Occasional stalling shortly after start up
- Rail pressure on a scan tool climbing slowly toward its target
Likely causes
- Weak or worn high pressure pump, or a worn pump drive lobe or tappet
- Low lift pump delivery or a restricted fuel filter starving the high pressure pump
- Air drawn into the fuel system after a filter change or through a leak on the suction side
- Injector or pressure relief valve leaking back to return and bleeding rail pressure away
- Sticking fuel volume control or pressure control valve
- Rail pressure sensor that is slow, drifted or noisy
- Poor fuel quality or contamination affecting pump lubrication and delivery
How to fix it
- Record a cold start and graph commanded against actual rail pressure to see how long convergence takes
- Measure lift pump supply pressure and check the filter and suction lines for restriction or air ingress
- Perform a return flow or back leakage test on the injectors and the pressure relief valve
- Check the volume or pressure control valve resistance, then command it with a scan tool while watching the pressure respond
- Inspect the fuel for contamination and confirm the correct fuel type and quality
- Evaluate high pressure pump output using the manufacturer's pressure build test
- Replace the component the tests condemn, purge air from the system and record another cold start to confirm the repair
