Closed Loop Fuel Pressure Control At Limit - Pressure Too High

Jump to the fix

Severity

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Compare commanded and actual rail pressure in live data across idle, load and overrun

  • 6ESequence number

What does it mean?

The module regulates high pressure fuel by comparing the rail pressure sensor signal with its target and adjusting the volume or pressure control valve accordingly. This code is stored when the control has already been commanded to its minimum delivery position and the measured rail pressure is still above target. In other words the module has lost the ability to bring pressure down, so either the control valve is not responding, the return path is blocked, or the sensor is reporting the pressure incorrectly. Excess rail pressure raises injection quantity per pulse and stresses the injectors, pump and lines.

Symptoms

  • Harsh combustion noise, especially on a diesel, with heavy knock under load
  • Black smoke and a strong exhaust smell
  • Reduced power or limp mode when the module protects the fuel system
  • MIL on with rail pressure values above target in live data
  • Hot restart problems and, in severe cases, fuel leaks at unions under excessive pressure
  • Rough idle and vibration

Likely causes

  • Fuel volume or pressure control valve sticking, contaminated or jammed toward the open position
  • Restricted or kinked fuel return line, so pressure cannot bleed off
  • Pressure relief valve stuck closed and unable to open at its designed pressure
  • Rail pressure sensor drifted so it reports the wrong value and the module compensates in the wrong direction
  • Control valve wiring shorted to voltage, holding the valve in a high delivery state
  • Debris in the valve seat from fuel system contamination
  • An incorrect pump, valve or regulator fitted at a previous repair

How to fix it

  1. Compare commanded and actual rail pressure in live data across idle, load and overrun
  2. Verify the sensor plausibility with the engine off; a healthy rail pressure sensor reads near zero at rest
  3. Command the volume or pressure control valve with a scan tool and watch whether actual pressure follows
  4. Measure the valve resistance and check its control circuit for a short to battery voltage or a driver fault
  5. Inspect the return line for kinks, crushing and internal restriction and confirm free flow to the tank
  6. Remove and inspect the control valve and relief valve for contamination and sticking
  7. Replace only the component the tests condemn, then confirm regulation over a full road test
