Diesel Intake Air Flow A Control System - High Air Flow Detected

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Work from verification toward repair; the valve is often blamed for a leak somewhere else.

What does it mean?

The diesel intake air flow control system uses an electrically operated intake throttle valve to restrict the air entering the engine, mainly so that enough exhaust gas can be drawn in through the EGR circuit, so the engine can be shut down without shaking, and so intake temperature can be raised during particulate filter regeneration.

The control module commands a valve angle and then compares the mass air flow actually reported by the intake air flow sensor with the value its model expects for that command. P02EC is stored when the measured air flow stays significantly above the modelled target while the valve is commanded toward a closed or partly closed position, and the deviation lasts longer than the calibrated time.

In practice this means the restriction the module asked for is not happening: either the plate is not moving as far as commanded, or the air reaching the engine is not being measured or routed the way the model assumes. The letter A identifies the first intake air flow control assembly on engines fitted with more than one.

Symptoms

  • MIL on with the code stored, frequently together with EGR or particulate filter codes
  • The engine shakes or runs on briefly when switched off, because the intake is no longer choked at shutdown
  • Rough or hunting idle, most noticeable while the engine is cold
  • Reduced power, and on some vehicles limp mode once the fault is confirmed
  • More visible exhaust smoke and poor results in an emissions inspection
  • Frequent or incomplete particulate filter regeneration cycles

Likely causes

  • Intake air flow control valve stuck open or sluggish because of soot and oil deposits on the plate and in the bore
  • Failed actuator motor or internal position feedback inside the valve unit, so the plate never reaches the commanded angle
  • Broken, seized or disconnected linkage between the actuator and the throttle plate
  • Intake air flow (MAF) sensor over-reporting because of contamination, damage or an incorrect replacement element
  • Unmetered air entering downstream through a cracked intake pipe, a loose clamp, a split intercooler hose or a leaking manifold gasket
  • EGR valve stuck closed, which raises fresh air flow above the value the module calculates
  • Wiring faults in the valve control or feedback circuit: chafed harness, corroded connector, poor ground

How to fix it

  1. Read every stored code and the freeze frame data first, since EGR or sensor codes stored at the same time usually identify the real fault
  2. Inspect the whole intake tract for leaks, loose clamps, split hoses and a damaged intercooler before touching the valve
  3. Watch commanded position, actual position and measured air flow in live data while sweeping the valve with the scan tool actuator test
  4. Remove the control valve and check the plate for carbon build-up and free movement through its full travel; clean it if it is serviceable
  5. Compare measured air flow with specification at idle and under load to decide whether the sensor or the valve is misreporting
  6. Test the actuator supply, ground, control and feedback wiring for open circuit, short to ground, short to battery and voltage drop, wiggling the harness during the test
  7. Verify that the EGR valve opens and closes properly, then repair or renew only the component the tests condemn, clear the code and confirm over a drive cycle that includes a cold start and a shutdown
