Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Record the freeze frame data and note the temperature and run time at which the code set

What does it mean?

This code is not about a broken wire but about behaviour that does not match expectation. The control module commands the cold start fuel injection circuit and then compares the electrical response, such as switching time and current rise, with the pattern it expects for that command.

P02FE is stored when the circuit is electrically alive but its response falls outside the calibrated window: the device reacts too slowly, draws the wrong current, or the fuelling correction that follows does not produce the change in combustion the module predicted. Faults of this type are usually caused by added resistance in the circuit, a weak or partly blocked injector, or a device that still works but no longer meets specification.

Because nothing is fully open or shorted, the code often comes and goes rather than staying present.

Symptoms

  • Cold starts take noticeably longer than they used to, although the engine does fire
  • Rough idle and light hesitation throughout the warm-up phase
  • MIL on with the code stored; the fault often clears itself and returns later
  • Slightly higher fuel consumption on short journeys
  • Smell of unburnt fuel during warm-up, or visible smoke on a cold morning
  • Everything feels normal once the engine is warm, which makes the complaint hard to reproduce

Likely causes

  • Partially clogged or worn cold start injector delivering less fuel than commanded
  • Increased resistance in the control or supply circuit from corroded terminals or a poor splice
  • Weak solenoid with a slow opening and closing response
  • Low fuel supply pressure at the point the cold start function draws from
  • Marginal ground connection giving the driver an unstable reference
  • Intermittent contact in the connector that only appears under vibration or heat
  • Outdated module calibration on vehicles for which the manufacturer has released an update for this function

How to fix it

  1. Record the freeze frame data and note the temperature and run time at which the code set
  2. Watch the cold start injection command and its feedback in live data during a genuine cold start, not at warm idle
  3. Measure circuit resistance and voltage drop under load; even a small increase can push the response outside the window
  4. Check fuel supply pressure and volume at the point the cold start function feeds from
  5. Remove the injector and inspect the tip and spray pattern, then flow test or renew it if delivery is restricted
  6. Clean and re-tension the connector terminals and secure the harness so vibration cannot create intermittent contact
  7. Check whether a module software update exists for the cold start strategy before condemning parts, then verify the repair over several cold starts
