First step

A typical diagnostic sequence used by mechanics, provided here for educational reference only. Diagnostic work should be performed by a qualified mechanic with the appropriate tools and training. 1. Read the full code list and freeze frame before touching anything. P0705 alongside P0706 to P0708 tells you a lot about whether the sensor is reading out of range or just intermittent 2. Wiggle test the sensor connector with the engine running and the scanner watching live gear position.

What does it mean?

Transmissions/transaxles can use combination Park Neutral Position (PNP) and Back-up switch. This switch incorporates a range selector switch (Figure 1). There are 4 inputs (PRND A, B, C, P), which can be switched to ground by the PNP switches. The four switches have a unique switch pattern. The control module (PCM or TCM0 uses the combination of the switch patterns in order to determine the gear selected by the driver and send that information to the control module.

The transmission range (TR) switch, also called the manual lever position (MLP) sensor, is used as an input to the control module that which indicates the drive range requested by the driver. The range switch is usually located on the outside of the case on the transmission/transaxle housing and attached to the shifter. As the gear range selector is moved, the TR switch can make switch connections for each gear range.

These inputs allow the control module to determine which gear range has been selected. The TR switch is used to Keep engine from starting in any gear position except park or neutral Allows a progressive shift sequence in drive Limit upshifts in manual ranges Operate the backup lights in reverse.

NOTE: Whenever diagnosing a 700 series DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) with a transmission, transfer case or other driveline components, check for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) under chassis and body systems, not just under “P” or powertrain/engine or emission control type codes. Module communications DTCs are “U” codes. These are most often found when looking for DTCs under chassis or body systems.

Chassis related codes are labeled “C” and body system related codes are labeled “B” codes and these can cause drivetrain issues if they affect a sensor that is also used by the heating and air conditioning system. Figure 1 Trans Range Switch Wiring Diagram The DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) monitors the 4 inputs in order to determine what gear position the transmission is in. When the control module detects that an illegal range has occurred, this DTC sets.
