Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Graph the coolant temperature value during a road test and note the exact moments it collapses

What does it mean?

P1114 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: ECT Sensor Circuit Low Input (Intermittent) .

Symptoms

  • Check engine light that appears intermittently over several trips
  • Coolant temperature in live data jumping to an extreme hot value for a moment
  • Cooling fans switching to high speed for no reason
  • Temperature gauge flicking upward and returning
  • Lean running during the fault, causing hesitation and a stumble on acceleration
  • Hard cold starting because the module fuels as if the engine were already warm

Likely causes

  • Signal wire chafed against the block, a bracket or the thermostat housing
  • Coolant leaking into the connector from a weeping sensor seal and bridging the terminals
  • Sensor with an internal short that appears when hot or under vibration
  • Corroded terminals partly touching each other inside a damaged connector
  • Harness pinched during a previous cooling system or timing repair
  • Poor ground or a shared ground fault affecting several temperature circuits

How to fix it

  1. Graph the coolant temperature value during a road test and note the exact moments it collapses
  2. Compare the live value with an infrared thermometer reading at the sensor housing to confirm which one is wrong
  3. Unplug the sensor with the ignition on; the value should swing to the opposite extreme, proving the wiring and module respond
  4. With the sensor disconnected, check resistance between the signal wire and ground while flexing the harness
  5. Inspect the connector for coolant, corrosion and displaced terminals; dry, clean and reseal it
  6. Measure the sensor resistance cold and hot against the manufacturer's table
  7. Repair the shorted harness or fit a new sensor and seal, then confirm a smooth warm-up curve
