What does it mean?
P1126 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Thermostat Malfunction (Stuck Open, indirectly linked to oil system cooling in some engines) .
Symptoms
- Malfunction indicator lamp coming on after a longer drive rather than immediately
- Temperature gauge staying low or rising very slowly, especially in cold weather
- Cabin heater blowing lukewarm air
- Noticeably higher fuel consumption and a longer cold enrichment period
- Idle staying elevated for an unusually long time after start
Likely causes
- Thermostat stuck open or closing incompletely because of a worn wax element
- Thermostat of the wrong opening temperature fitted during a previous repair
- Debris or sealant fragments trapped on the thermostat seat
- Low coolant level or trapped air preventing the thermostat from working in flowing coolant
- Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor reading lower than actual, making the controller believe warm-up failed
- Electrically controlled thermostat heater circuit open or shorted on map-controlled systems
- Radiator fan running constantly because of a stuck relay, overcooling the engine
How to fix it
- Check coolant level and condition first; top up and bleed trapped air before any further testing
- Watch ECT live data from a cold start and confirm the engine reaches its normal operating range within a reasonable warm-up drive
- Compare the ECT reading with a surface thermometer at the housing to confirm the sensor is accurate
- Feel or measure the upper and lower radiator hoses during warm-up; a lower hose that gets hot early means the thermostat is passing coolant
- Verify the fitted thermostat matches the specified opening temperature for the engine
- On map-controlled units, measure the heater winding resistance and check the control circuit from the PCM
- Replace the thermostat and gasket, refill with the correct coolant, bleed the system and re-run the warm-up test
