Cooling Fan Control Circuit Improper Voltage

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Check charging system voltage first and confirm it is within the normal range

What does it mean?

P1482 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cooling Fan Control Circuit Improper Voltage .

Symptoms

  • MIL on
  • Fan runs at the wrong speed, or cuts in and out erratically
  • Coolant temperature swings more than it should
  • A/C cooling varies with road speed and engine load
  • Fan noise changes suddenly while driving

Likely causes

  • High resistance from corroded terminals and connectors in the fan control circuit
  • Fan control wire partially shorted to another circuit and picking up stray voltage
  • Failing fan relay or solid state fan control module with an unstable output
  • Poor ground causing a voltage offset on the control line
  • Fan motor with worn brushes producing erratic current draw
  • Damaged harness with broken strands inside intact insulation
  • Charging system voltage out of range, which distorts the whole circuit

How to fix it

  1. Check charging system voltage first and confirm it is within the normal range
  2. Measure the actual voltage on the fan control circuit while commanding the fan on and off
  3. Perform voltage drop tests on both the feed and ground sides of the fan circuit
  4. Inspect and clean every connector in the fan circuit, including body ground points
  5. Test the fan module or relay output with the fan connected and then disconnected
  6. Measure fan motor current draw and compare it with specification
  7. Replace the failed relay, fan module or motor once the wiring is proven sound
