What does it mean?
P1587 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Engine Mount Valves Short to Ground .
Symptoms
- Check engine light on with the fault stored
- Noticeably stronger engine vibration at idle, felt through the seat and steering wheel
- Booming or droning noise in the cabin at certain engine speeds
- Harshness when the vehicle is stationary in gear or when the air conditioning cycles
- Vibration that used to be damped now transmits into the body
- Comfort deteriorates but engine power itself is unchanged
Likely causes
- Control wire chafed through and touching the engine block, subframe or a bracket
- Wiring pinched or trapped during previous engine mount, gearbox or subframe work
- Internally shorted solenoid valve inside the engine mount
- Oil-soaked and corroded connector at the mount, common when there is an oil leak nearby
- Insulation broken down by heat where the wire runs close to the exhaust
- Moisture and road salt entering the connector from below
- Damaged driver stage inside the control module after the short
How to fix it
- Locate the mount solenoid connector and inspect it for oil, corrosion and damaged terminals
- Disconnect the solenoid and measure the resistance from the control wire to ground; a low reading confirms the short
- With the solenoid unplugged, retest the circuit to determine whether the short is in the wiring or inside the mount
- Follow the harness along its route and look for pinch points, chafed sections and heat damage
- Repair or reroute the damaged wiring and protect it with suitable sleeving
- Replace the engine mount or its solenoid when the short is internal
- Verify that the module driver still works by commanding the valve with a scan tool, then clear the code and check idle vibration
