What does it mean?
P1661 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: MIL Control Circuit Malfunction .
Symptoms
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) does not illuminate during the ignition bulb check
- Or the lamp stays on permanently regardless of engine condition
- Codes are stored in the module but the driver never gets a warning
- Other cluster indicators may misbehave at the same time
- The vehicle can fail an inspection because the lamp cannot perform its self-check
Likely causes
- Burnt MIL bulb, or a failed LED driver in the instrument cluster
- Open or shorted wire between the control module and the cluster
- Corroded or loose cluster connector terminals
- Internal fault in the instrument cluster lamp circuit
- Blown instrument panel fuse
- The lamp deliberately disabled: bulb removed or the wire cut to hide an existing fault
- Failed MIL output driver inside the control module
How to fix it
- Turn the ignition on without cranking and watch the cluster self-check to see whether the lamp lights at all
- Check the instrument panel fuse and the cluster power and ground connections
- Unplug the cluster connector and inspect for corrosion, bent pins and loose terminal tension
- Test the wire between the control module and the cluster for continuity and for shorts to ground and battery voltage
- Look for a removed bulb, a cut wire or other tampering intended to hide a warning lamp
- Replace the failed bulb or repair the cluster lamp circuit
- Consider the module output driver only after the bulb, cluster and wiring are proven good
