What does it mean?
P1689 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Traction Control Delivered Torque Output Circuit .
Symptoms
- MIL on together with traction control and often ABS warning lights
- Traction control disabled, with no intervention on slippery surfaces
- Engine power reduced as a precaution on some vehicles
- Hesitant or rough acceleration when the system cannot manage torque
- Stability control lamp staying on continuously
- Warning lights that clear after a restart and then return during driving
Likely causes
- Open or high-resistance wire in the torque output circuit between the two modules
- Short to ground or to battery positive on that circuit
- Corroded or backed-out terminals at either module connector
- Faulty traction control or ABS module that will not accept or acknowledge the signal
- Wheel speed sensor fault upsetting the traction control module so it flags the torque interface
- Poor shared ground between the two modules
- Failed output driver inside the engine control module
How to fix it
- Scan every module, not just the engine; the traction control or ABS module usually holds the more useful code
- Locate the torque output circuit in the wiring diagram and check it end to end for continuity and shorts
- Inspect both module connectors for corrosion, spread terminals and moisture
- Compare wheel speed values in live data; a dead or noisy wheel speed sensor often starts this chain
- Voltage drop test the ground circuits shared by both modules
- Repair or replace the damaged harness section with a sealed joint
- Replace the traction control module only after the circuit and all wheel speed inputs have proven good
