What does it mean?
P1741 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Torque Converter Clutch Control Circuit Malfunction .
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) on, often with no other obvious complaint at first
- Engine RPM stays high at steady cruising speed because lockup never applies
- Noticeable increase in fuel consumption on longer runs
- Shudder or vibration at light throttle around lockup speed
- Engine stalls when coming to a stop if the clutch stays applied
- Transmission runs hotter than normal in traffic
Likely causes
- Torque converter clutch solenoid open, shorted or mechanically stuck
- Open circuit, short to ground or short to battery in the solenoid drive wire
- Corroded case connector or an internal harness soaked in ATF
- Sticking converter clutch regulator valve in a worn valve body bore
- Low fluid level or low line pressure preventing controlled apply
- Worn converter clutch friction lining or a failing converter
- Module driver stage failure, considered after all circuit tests pass
How to fix it
- Check fluid level, colour and smell, and top up or service as required
- Watch converter slip RPM on live data at steady speed and see whether lockup ever applies
- Command the converter clutch on with a scan tool and look for the expected RPM drop
- Measure solenoid resistance at the case connector and compare with specification
- Test the drive circuit for opens and shorts with the solenoid disconnected
- Inspect the internal harness and case connector for fluid contamination and chafing
- Replace the solenoid or valve body, and evaluate the torque converter if slip remains after repair
