Idle Switch Circuit Malfunction

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Both pedal signals must track together across the full stroke.

What does it mean?

P1795 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: A/T Accelerator Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction .

Symptoms

  • MIL (check engine lamp) is on and the vehicle may go into reduced power mode
  • No kickdown, and the transmission holds gears far too long or shifts far too early
  • Hesitation, surging or a dead spot when accelerating
  • Transmission may lock into limp mode
  • Idle speed unstable or the engine does not respond to the pedal at all
  • Cruise control unavailable

Likely causes

  • Worn track inside the accelerator pedal position sensor, giving a dropout at part travel
  • The two sensor tracks no longer agreeing with each other across the pedal stroke
  • Corroded, damp or loose connector at the pedal assembly, often after a spill or a wet carpet
  • Open, shorted or high-resistance signal, reference or ground wire under the dash
  • Pedal mechanically binding, or a floor mat or object restricting its travel
  • Missing or corrupted pedal position message reaching the transmission module
  • Control module input circuit fault

How to fix it

  1. Watch both accelerator position signals in live data while pressing the pedal slowly from rest to the floor and back
  2. Look for a dropout, a stuck value, or the two tracks separating from their expected relationship
  3. Check the connector at the pedal for moisture, corrosion and loose terminals
  4. Verify both reference voltages and both grounds at the pedal connector with the ignition on
  5. Check for mechanical binding, carpet interference or an obstruction under the pedal
  6. Replace the pedal assembly once wiring is proven, then carry out the pedal relearn procedure
