What does it mean?
P1899 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: P/N Position/Transaxle Range Switch Circuit Malfunction .
Symptoms
- Engine will not crank in Park, or cranks in a gear other than Park and Neutral
- Reverse lamps do not work, or come on in the wrong selector position
- Gear indicator on the dash is blank, wrong or flickers between positions
- Malfunction indicator lamp on with harsh shifts or fixed default line pressure
- Transmission stuck in a single gear because it cannot confirm the range
- Rear-view camera may not switch on when Reverse is selected
Likely causes
- Range (neutral safety) switch out of adjustment after linkage or transmission work
- Worn switch contacts giving an intermittent or overlapping signal
- Open or short in one of the range switch circuits
- Water or corrosion inside the switch or its connector on the transmission
- Stretched or misadjusted shift cable so the lever never reaches the detent
- Loose manual shift shaft or worn detent mechanism
- Faulty input circuit in the TCM/PCM
How to fix it
- Check the shift cable or linkage adjustment and confirm the lever reaches each detent fully
- Move the selector through every position while watching the range switch states in live data
- Look for two positions reported at once, or none at all, at a specific gear
- Inspect the switch connector for water, corrosion and terminal condition
- Measure switch continuity at each position directly at the switch
- Adjust the switch to specification with the transmission in Neutral, then retest
- Replace the range switch if the contacts are worn, and repair any damaged circuit in the harness
