SCP (J1850) Invalid or Missing Data for Wheels

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Watch all wheel speed values in live data during a road test and identify any that disagree with the others

  • UNetwork
  • 1Manufacturer-specific
  • 0Network / Communication
  • 37Sequence number

What does it mean?

U1037 is a Network (CAN bus, module communications) fault code. It indicates: Data Circuit Message .

Symptoms

  • ABS and stability control lamps on, often together with the traction control lamp
  • Speedometer or odometer readings erratic, low or frozen
  • Traction and stability control unavailable or intervening at the wrong moment
  • Cruise control refusing to set or cancelling by itself
  • Automatic transmission shifting harshly because it lacks reliable speed data
  • Fault appearing only once the vehicle exceeds a certain speed

Likely causes

  • Wheel speed sensor circuit fault, so the transmitting module has no valid wheel data to send
  • Damaged reluctor ring or a sensor clogged with metal debris
  • Open circuit, high resistance or a short on the serial data line between the sending and receiving modules
  • Corroded connector at the brake or chassis control module that originates the message
  • Poor ground on the transmitting module, distorting the data it sends
  • Mismatched tyre sizes or a fitted temporary spare, making wheel data implausible
  • Software or configuration mismatch after a wheel speed related component or module was replaced

How to fix it

  1. Watch all wheel speed values in live data during a road test and identify any that disagree with the others
  2. Inspect each wheel speed sensor, its air gap, the reluctor ring and the connector at the wheel arch
  3. Check the sensor harness where it flexes near the suspension for chafing and internal breaks
  4. Confirm tyre sizes match on all corners and remove any temporary spare before retesting
  5. Test the serial data circuit between the transmitting and receiving modules for continuity and shorts
  6. Clean and reseat the connectors on the transmitting module and do a voltage drop test on its ground
  7. Verify module configuration and software after any recent component replacement
  8. Repair the wiring or replace the failed sensor as the tests indicate, then clear codes and confirm the data is now plausible
