SCP (J1850) Invalid or Missing Data for Suspension

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Treat this as a safety critical fault and follow the correct disarm procedure before disturbing any restraint wiring

  • UNetwork
  • 1Manufacturer-specific
  • 0Network / Communication
  • 88Sequence number

What does it mean?

U1088 is a Network (CAN bus, module communications) fault code. It indicates: No Communication With SDM (Restraint Module) .

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning lamp on permanently and never completing its bulb check
  • Airbag system fully disabled, so the restraints will not deploy in a collision
  • Seat belt pretensioner and passenger occupancy detection inoperative
  • Scan tool cannot access the restraint module while other modules answer
  • Possible additional warnings for related systems that share crash data
  • Roll-over or side impact functions also unavailable

Likely causes

  • Blown fuse in the airbag module supply
  • Corroded or unlatched SDM connector, often disturbed during carpet, console or seat work
  • Water damage to the module or its connector, since the SDM sits low in the centre of the vehicle
  • Poor or corroded ground at the airbag module mounting bolts
  • Open or shorted bus wiring between the SDM and the gateway
  • Internal SDM failure, or a module that has locked itself out after a deployment
  • A previously deployed airbag system where the SDM was not replaced or reset

How to fix it

  1. Treat this as a safety critical fault and follow the correct disarm procedure before disturbing any restraint wiring
  2. Attempt communication with the restraint module and note which other modules respond
  3. Check the fuse and supply circuit for the airbag module, testing them under load
  4. Inspect the module connector under the console or carpet for water damage, corrosion and an unlatched lock
  5. Check the module mounting bolts and ground path, cleaning corroded surfaces
  6. Test the bus lines between the SDM and the gateway for continuity, shorts to ground and to battery voltage
  7. Check the vehicle history for a previous deployment or flood damage, which commonly locks the module permanently
  8. Replace and program the restraint module only when supply, ground and bus wiring are verified, and always follow the specified handling procedure
