SCP (J1850) Invalid or Missing Data for Suspension

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Read the ride height sensor values in live data at each corner and compare them with the actual measured heights

  • 0Network / Communication
  • 89Sequence number

What does it mean?

U1089 is a Network (CAN bus, module communications) fault code. It indicates: Data Circuit Message .

Symptoms

  • Suspension warning lamp or a chassis message on the display
  • Vehicle sitting too low, too high or unevenly across the axles
  • Adaptive damping stuck in one setting, so the ride feels either harsh or floaty
  • Ride height selection buttons ignored
  • Compressor running excessively or not at all on air suspension systems
  • Headlamp levelling not adjusting on vehicles that use ride height data for it

Likely causes

  • Ride height sensor circuit fault, so the suspension controller has no valid data to broadcast
  • Suspension control module without power or ground because of a fuse, relay or corroded earth
  • Open circuit, high resistance or short on the data line between the suspension module and the receiver
  • Corroded connector at a ride height sensor or at the suspension module
  • Harness damage where the wiring flexes with suspension movement at the wheel arch
  • Air suspension or damper actuator fault making the module report implausible values
  • Configuration or software mismatch after a suspension component or module replacement

How to fix it

  1. Read the ride height sensor values in live data at each corner and compare them with the actual measured heights
  2. Inspect each ride height sensor, its linkage and its connector for damage, corrosion and detached links
  3. Check the harness at the wheel arches where it flexes with suspension travel for internal breaks
  4. Test the serial data circuit between the suspension module and the receiving module for continuity and shorts
  5. Verify power and ground at the suspension control module with voltage drop tests
  6. Check for air leaks, a failed compressor or damper actuator faults that would produce implausible data
  7. Confirm module configuration and calibration after any component replacement, and recalibrate ride height if required
  8. Repair wiring or replace the failed sensor first, and treat the module as the last suspect
