SCP (J1850) Invalid or Missing Data for Vehicle Speed Control

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Verify the complaint on a road test and note exactly when the system refuses to set or cancels

  • UNetwork
  • 1Manufacturer-specific
  • 0Network / Communication
  • 98Sequence number

What does it mean?

U1098 is a Network (CAN bus, module communications) fault code. It indicates: Data Circuit Message .

Symptoms

  • Cruise control will not engage, or cancels immediately after being set
  • Cruise control drops out on its own during a drive
  • Cruise indicator lamp not illuminating when the system is switched on
  • Speedometer erratic at the same time as the cruise complaint
  • Brake lights behaving abnormally if a pedal switch is at fault
  • Other communication or speed related codes stored alongside

Likely causes

  • Vehicle speed signal lost or implausible at its source, so no valid speed can be shared
  • Brake or clutch pedal switch fault putting the cruise control system into a permanent cancel state
  • Open circuit, high resistance or short on the data line between the sending and receiving modules
  • Cruise control switch or steering wheel control circuit fault, including a worn clock spring
  • Corroded connector or a damaged splice on the data circuit
  • Throttle actuator or engine controller fault preventing valid speed control messages
  • Software or configuration mismatch after a module replacement, so cruise data is not exchanged correctly

How to fix it

  1. Verify the complaint on a road test and note exactly when the system refuses to set or cancels
  2. Watch the vehicle speed value in live data across several modules to see whether the speed signal itself is the problem
  3. Check the brake and clutch pedal switch status in live data while operating each pedal, and adjust or replace a faulty switch
  4. Test the cruise control switches for correct resistance or signal, including the clock spring circuit if the switches are on the steering wheel
  5. Test the serial data circuit between the modules for continuity, shorts to ground and shorts to battery voltage
  6. Inspect the connectors and splices in the circuit for corrosion and spread terminals
  7. Verify module software and configuration after any recent replacement
  8. Repair the faulty switch, sensor or wiring first and retest before considering any module replacement
