Can I keep driving?

First step

  • 76Sequence number

What does it mean?

U1176 is a Network (CAN bus, module communications) fault code. It indicates: Lost Communication With Emergency Alert Module .

Symptoms

  • Emergency call button lit red or showing a fault indication
  • A message on the display that the emergency call system is not available
  • Connected services and related telematics features not working
  • The module is unreachable with the scan tool while other modules answer normally
  • Occasional battery drain if the module keeps waking the network
  • The fault often follows an accident repair, a flat battery or work in the boot area

Likely causes

  • Blown fuse or an open power feed to the emergency alert module
  • Degraded or dead backup battery inside the module, which many of these units use so they can still call after a crash
  • Corroded or wet connector at the module, which is often mounted under a seat, behind trim or in the boot area
  • Damaged antenna lead or antenna connector
  • Open or shorted bus wiring between the module and the gateway or body control module
  • Module deactivated, incorrectly coded or replaced without configuration
  • Internal module failure after water ingress or an impact

How to fix it

  1. Scan all modules and note whether the emergency alert module is the only one missing
  2. Check the module fuse and measure supply voltage and ground at its connector under load
  3. Remove the trim and inspect the module, connector and surrounding area for water marks and corrosion
  4. Check the condition and age of the module backup battery, since a failed cell often takes the module offline
  5. Inspect the antenna lead and its connector for damage or disconnection
  6. Test the bus wiring from the module to the gateway for opens and shorts
  7. Replace or reconfigure the module last, following the correct coding and activation procedure, and dispose of the backup battery safely
