What does it mean?
U1261 is a Network (CAN bus, module communications) fault code. It indicates: Data Circuit Message .
Symptoms
- Modules appear and disappear on the scan tool, or the link keeps dropping
- Multiple warning lamps illuminate together with no mechanical fault present
- Central locking, windows, wipers or lighting work only sometimes
- Cluster gauges freeze or read incorrectly
- Battery flat in the morning because a module never sleeps
- Faults are worse in wet weather or over rough roads
Likely causes
- Open circuit in the bus negative wire, typically at a splice, a repair joint or a connector
- Bus negative wire shorted to ground through a rubbed-through section of loom
- Bus negative shorted to battery voltage where the harness has chafed against a live feed
- Corroded, wet or spread terminal on the bus negative pin at a module connector
- Moisture inside a connector creating a leakage path between the two bus wires
- A module with a failed internal transceiver holding the negative line low
- Damage to the loom after bodywork, accessory fitment or rodent activity
How to fix it
- Scan every module and list which ones answer to identify the affected branch
- Check the diagnostic connector pins for corrosion and push-back
- With the ignition off, test the bus negative wire for continuity end to end and for short to ground and to battery
- Flex and tap each harness section while watching for communication dropouts
- Open splice packs and connectors along the route and inspect for corrosion and moisture
- Unplug modules one by one to identify one that is pulling the line down
- Repair with soldered, heat-shrunk joints and reprotect the loom before considering any module
