What does it mean?
U3017 is a Network (CAN bus, module communications) fault code. It indicates: Control Module Timer-Clock Performance .
Symptoms
- Warning lamps on the dash, usually alongside other communication codes
- Clock, trip data or stored settings reset every time the vehicle is parked
- Time stamps in freeze frame data look wrong or out of sequence
- Comfort or driver assistance features drop out intermittently
- Scan tool loses contact with the module or reads it unusually slowly
- The code clears but comes back within a few key cycles
Likely causes
- Low or unstable supply voltage at the affected control module, often from a weak or aging battery
- Voltage drop across a corroded power feed, ground strap or fuse box terminal
- Loss of the constant (keep-alive) battery feed after a blown fuse or a disturbed connector
- Corroded or spread terminals in the module connector upsetting the timing reference
- Software or calibration mismatch after a module replacement or an interrupted reflash
- Timing errors on the CAN bus caused by another module transmitting out of sync
- Internal failure of the timer/clock circuit inside the control module
How to fix it
- Load test the battery and verify charging voltage stays within specification
- Measure voltage drop on the module's supply and ground circuits with the electrical load switched on
- Check the constant battery feed and its fuse, the circuit that keeps the module's clock alive
- Inspect the module connector for corrosion, moisture and loose terminals, then reseat and protect it
- Scan every module for stored network codes and repair those faults first
- Verify the module carries the correct current software level and reflash if an update applies
- Replace and program the control module only after the supply and network checks pass
