What does it mean?
B1282 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Windshield Wiper Switch INT (AUTO) Position Circuit Malfunction .
Symptoms
- Intermittent/AUTO wiping does not work while low and high speed may still function
- Wipers sweep continuously in the intermittent position or start on their own
- The delay adjustment ring has no effect on wipe interval
- Wipers sometimes fail to return to the park position
- A wiper system warning message may appear on the driver display
Likely causes
- Worn or oxidised contacts in the INT position of the wiper stalk (combination switch)
- Water intrusion into the steering column switch assembly
- Open or high resistance in the wire between the stalk and the body control module
- Signal circuit shorted to ground, so the module sees INT permanently selected
- Rain sensor fault on vehicles where the AUTO position depends on that input
- Loose or corroded connector at the base of the steering column, often disturbed during clockspring or airbag work
- Body control module input stage failure
How to fix it
- Read the wiper switch states in live data while moving the stalk through every position
- Back-probe the INT signal wire at the switch connector and watch for a clean state change with a multimeter
- Inspect the column connector for corrosion, water tracking and bent pins
- Check continuity and resistance of the wire between the stalk and the module, looking for chafing where the loom enters the column
- With the switch unplugged, test the circuit for a short to ground
- Replace the combination switch if the INT contact does not make and break cleanly
- Repair the harness, or reprogram/replace the body module only after switch and wiring are confirmed good
