Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

What does it mean?

B1283 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Windshield Wiper Switch LOW Position Circuit Malfunction .

Symptoms

  • Wipers do not run at low speed although high speed may still work
  • Wipers run at low speed on their own or refuse to switch off
  • Intermittent wiping is also lost, because it is derived from the low-speed circuit
  • Wipers stop mid-sweep instead of parking at the bottom of the screen
  • Reduced visibility in rain and a possible wiper warning message

Likely causes

  • Burnt or worn low-speed contacts inside the wiper stalk
  • Open circuit in the LOW signal wire between the stalk and the controlling module
  • Short to ground on the LOW circuit, which makes the module see low speed permanently requested
  • Moisture and corrosion inside the steering column switch pack
  • Poor ground for the switch assembly
  • Wiper motor low-speed brush circuit fault on systems that monitor motor feedback
  • Controlling module input or driver failure

How to fix it

  1. Monitor the wiper switch inputs in live data through every stalk position
  2. Perform a voltage-drop test on the LOW circuit with low speed commanded on
  3. Unplug the stalk and check the LOW wire for a short to ground
  4. Inspect and dry the column switch connector, looking for green corrosion on the terminals
  5. Verify the wiper motor and its ground path before condemning the switch
  6. Replace the combination switch if the LOW contact is open or intermittent
  7. Repair the harness section, and replace the module only if its input or driver stage is proven faulty
