Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Perform a full system scan to identify exactly which lamp nodes dropped off the bus

What does it mean?

B1292 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Short to GND in Light System Communication Bus Malfunction .

Symptoms

  • Complete loss of communication with the lighting modules, lamps default to off or to full on
  • Adaptive and automatic lighting features disabled
  • Lighting failure warning shown on the display
  • Scan tool cannot see one or more lamp modules
  • In some cases the lighting circuit fuse blows repeatedly

Likely causes

  • Bus wire grounded against body metal where the loom passes through a bulkhead or door grommet
  • Loom crushed behind a headlamp or in the tailgate hinge area
  • Water inside a lamp connector bridging the bus wire to a ground pin
  • Internal short inside a lamp control module or ballast holding the line low
  • Wiring damaged during bumper, lamp or bodywork repair
  • A poorly made splice from an aftermarket accessory
  • Rodent damage to the lighting harness

How to fix it

  1. Perform a full system scan to identify exactly which lamp nodes dropped off the bus
  2. Measure the bus line to ground with the ignition on; a line held near zero volts confirms the ground short
  3. Isolate branches by unplugging modules one by one until the short disappears
  4. Inspect grommets, bulkhead pass-throughs and tailgate or door flex points for cut insulation
  5. Dry and clean any lamp connector showing moisture, then reseal it properly
  6. Repair the damaged harness section rather than taping over it
  7. Replace the internally shorted lamp module if unplugging it clears the fault, then clear codes and retest
