Ignition Key-In Circuit Short To Ground

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Read all stored restraint codes first; several codes together point at the loom rather than at the airbag

What does it mean?

B1354 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: PAB Circuit Short To Ground .

Symptoms

  • SRS lamp on and the passenger airbag deactivated
  • If the short is intermittent the lamp often comes on over rough roads or when the dash is knocked
  • Other passenger side restraint codes may be stored alongside it
  • The code sets again within seconds of clearing when the short is permanent
  • No change in engine operation

Likely causes

  • Squib wire rubbed through against a dash brace, bracket edge or trim screw and touching bare metal
  • Water or coolant in the passenger footwell connector giving a leakage path to ground
  • Loom crushed where it passes the A-pillar or behind the glove box after trim work
  • Terminal backed out of the airbag connector and touching the metal mounting bracket
  • Internal short to the case inside the passenger inflator module
  • Dash accessory or audio installation screwed or cable-tied through the SRS loom
  • Airbag control module internal fault

How to fix it

  1. Read all stored restraint codes first; several codes together point at the loom rather than at the airbag
  2. Power the system down safely: ignition off, battery disconnected, reserve power discharge time observed
  3. Unplug both the airbag connector and the control module connector, then check each squib wire for continuity to body ground; a low reading confirms a shorted harness
  4. If the harness is clean with both ends unplugged, the short is inside the inflator or the control module
  5. Inspect the loom route for chafe against metal edges, and look for a screw or clip driven through it
  6. Dry out and reseal any footwell water leak before repairing the wiring
  7. Repair with the correct restraint-system repair parts rather than a twisted splice, then clear and verify the lamp goes out
