What does it mean?
B1404 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Passenger Front Side Impact Sensor (FSIS) Circuit Short To Ground .
Symptoms
- SRS lamp on with the passenger side and curtain airbags disabled
- The fault may set when the passenger door is slammed or over rough roads if the short is intermittent
- Other passenger side restraint codes may be stored at the same time
- The code returns immediately after clearing while the short is solid
- No effect on engine operation or driveability
Likely causes
- Sensor wiring chafed against the passenger door inner panel, a bracket or the B-pillar structure
- Water inside the passenger door after the vapour barrier or a window seal failed, tracking to ground at the connector
- Broken and grounded conductor in the passenger door harness inside the rubber hinge boot
- Sensor connector damaged or a terminal backed out and touching the sensor bracket
- Sensor shorted internally to its own housing
- Loom trapped and crushed during door trim, speaker or window regulator work
- Airbag control module input fault
How to fix it
- Read all restraint codes and note whether the fault is current or historic
- Power the system down safely, disconnect the battery and wait the specified reserve power discharge time
- With the sensor and the module connector both unplugged, measure the sensor circuit to body ground; a low reading confirms a shorted harness
- If the harness is clean with both ends free, the short is inside the sensor or the control module
- Inspect the harness inside the door hinge boot and behind the door trim for bare copper and crush damage
- Dry out the door and fix the water leak, then repair the wiring with approved restraint repair parts
- Replace the sensor if it is internally shorted, torque it to specification and confirm the lamp goes out after clearing
