Driver Power Window Up Circuit Short To Battery

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Treat every SRS circuit as live until it is proven safe.

What does it mean?

B1408 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Front impact sensor (RH) (squib) for power supply circuit .

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning lamp stays on from the moment the ignition is switched on
  • The restraint system is disabled, so front airbags and pretensioners will not fire in a collision
  • The code returns immediately after being cleared, or comes back on the first drive
  • No effect on how the engine runs, which is why the fault is often ignored
  • Vehicle fails a safety inspection because of the illuminated restraint lamp

Likely causes

  • Chafed yellow SRS harness at the front of the vehicle touching a live circuit, often after bumper or headlight work
  • Water and salt corrosion in the front right impact sensor connector, which sits low behind the bumper structure
  • Loose or partly mated sensor connector whose locking clip was never pushed home
  • Front impact sensor internally shorted or damaged by a minor front end knock
  • Sensor bracket not bolted down properly, giving a poor mounting and ground path
  • Repair harness or used sensor fitted from a deployed vehicle
  • Internal fault in the SRS control module driver for that sensor circuit

How to fix it

  1. Switch off the ignition, disconnect the battery and wait the manufacturer specified reserve energy discharge time before unplugging anything
  2. Inspect the front right impact sensor connector for water, road salt, bent pins or a partly seated lock
  3. Follow the yellow harness across the front of the car looking for chafe points, pinch damage or repairs made after body work
  4. With the sensor unplugged, check the supply line for a short to battery voltage and for continuity back to the control module
  5. Confirm the sensor bracket is tight and the mounting surface is clean bare metal
  6. If the same sensor is fitted on both sides, swap them and see whether the fault follows the part
  7. Fit a new sensor of the correct part number, never a used one from a deployed vehicle, then clear the codes and run the system self test
