What does it mean?
B1409 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Rear Left Audio Speaker Output Circuit Low - Base .
Symptoms
- Rear left speaker is silent, very quiet or badly distorted
- The audio system may mute all channels for a moment as it protects the output stage
- Sound drops out when the rear door is closed or when driving over rough surfaces
- A faint hum or buzz from that corner instead of programme audio
- Fault stored in the audio module and the channel stays dead after a power cycle
Likely causes
- Speaker wire pinched against sheet metal or a trim screw and shorted to the body
- Shorted voice coil in the rear left speaker after long term overdriving
- Chafed wiring in the rear door boot or under the rear sill trim
- Moisture and corrosion bridging the pins of the rear left speaker connector
- Aftermarket installation with the speaker negative wire grounded to the chassis, which the factory output will not tolerate
- Failing output stage inside the amplifier or head unit holding that channel low
How to fix it
- Retrieve the stored codes, clear them and verify whether the fault sets again straight away
- Unplug the rear left speaker and measure resistance from each output wire to a clean body ground; a good circuit is not connected to ground
- Measure the speaker itself; a shorted coil reads close to zero ohms instead of the usual few ohms
- Inspect the rear door boot and sill trim area for pinched, stapled or chafed wiring
- Dry out and clean any corroded connector, then protect it with dielectric grease and fix the water leak that caused it
- Replace the shorted speaker or repair the damaged wire section, then recheck the output with the system playing
- Correct any aftermarket wiring that grounds a speaker return line before replacing the amplifier or head unit
