What does it mean?
B1609 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Panel Dimmer Input Circuit/Performance .
Symptoms
- Interior lamps stay on continuously and the battery goes flat overnight
- Lamps ignore the dome switch off position
- The alarm behaves as if a door is open and refuses to arm
- Lighting fuse blows after the circuit has been shorted for a while
- On the dimmer variant, dash brightness jumps around and does not track the control smoothly
Likely causes
- Input wire chafed against a 12 V feed inside a door or behind the dash
- Aftermarket alarm, courtesy lighting or speaker wiring tapped into the illuminated entry circuit
- Door latch switch shorted internally to its own feed
- Water in a door connector bridging the input to a powered circuit
- Connector terminal displaced onto a live pin
- Module input clamp damaged by the short
- On applications where this code refers to the panel dimmer, an input reading outside its expected range from a worn rheostat track or a marginal connection
How to fix it
- With the key off and all doors shut, measure the input at the module; battery voltage there proves the circuit is shorted high
- Unplug the door latches one at a time to identify which branch carries the short
- Remove any aftermarket lighting or alarm taps and retest before condemning components
- Inspect the door loom where it crosses the window regulator and passes through the hinge boot
- Dry and clean any water affected connector and check the door drains and vapour barrier
- Repair the harness properly rather than taping over the damage, and re-route it clear of powered wires
- On the dimmer variant, sweep the control while watching live data and look for dead or noisy spots in the track
