What does it mean?

B1856 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Driver Window Control Circuit Open .

Symptoms

  • Driver window is completely dead in both directions
  • No motor sound at all when the switch is operated
  • Window sometimes works if the door is held in a certain position or the loom is moved
  • Glass drops down and will not come back up
  • All window functions from the driver switch pack may stop together

Likely causes

  • Broken conductor inside the door hinge boot, the most common failure point
  • Window motor connector unplugged, loose or with a backed-out terminal
  • Open winding inside the window motor
  • Corroded terminals after water has run down inside the door
  • Blown fuse or open connection in the window power supply
  • Poor ground for the door module or the window circuit
  • Module output driver open internally

How to fix it

  1. Check the fuse and the supply at the door module
  2. Back-probe the motor connector and command the window while watching for voltage
  3. If voltage is present, test the motor winding resistance and replace the motor if it is open
  4. If no voltage arrives, continuity test both control wires from the module to the motor
  5. Open the hinge boot and inspect for broken conductors, flexing the loom while measuring
  6. Repair the broken wires with proper crimped joints and reseal the boot
  7. Relearn the window position and auto function after the repair
