Heated Windshield Input Short to Ground

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Separate a stuck switch from a grounded wire before ordering anything.

What does it mean?

B2113 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: 5-Volt Supply Circuit High .

Symptoms

  • Heated windshield runs continuously or switches on by itself
  • Switch indicator stays illuminated regardless of the switch position
  • Heating function completely inoperative because the module has disabled the output
  • Noticeable engine load or dimming lights at idle while the element runs unrequested
  • Blown fuse in the heated glass circuit
  • Other sensor values reading implausibly high when the reference is out of range

Likely causes

  • Heated windshield switch with contacts stuck closed, often after moisture entered the switch pack
  • Signal wire chafed against body metal behind the dash or along the A pillar
  • Water tracking into the switch panel connector from a leaking windscreen seal or cowl drain
  • Heated windshield relay control wire shorted to ground, holding the relay energised
  • 5V reference wire touching a 12V feed, which drives the supply above specification
  • Corroded terminals at the body module connector
  • Faulty heated element connection at the glass creating an abnormal load
  • Body module input or driver failure after wiring has been proven good

How to fix it

  1. Confirm the manufacturer definition and locate the request input pin
  2. Watch the request state in live data with the switch untouched
  3. Unplug the switch and measure the input circuit resistance to ground, an open reading clears the harness
  4. If the circuit is still grounded with the switch off, trace the wire behind the dash and along the A pillar for chafing
  5. Check the relay and its control circuit, and confirm the relay is not stuck closed
  6. Measure the 5V reference against specification and look for contact with a battery feed
  7. Inspect for water leaks into the switch panel and dry or replace the connector
  8. Repair the wiring or switch, then verify the element only heats when requested and shuts off on time
