First step

Treat this as a live restraint circuit and follow the safety procedure before touching anything.

  • 1Body
  • 18Sequence number

What does it mean?

B2118 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Tilt Sensor .

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning lamp stays on after the bulb check and will not go out
  • The passenger side airbag is disabled, so it will not deploy in a crash
  • Passenger airbag status indicator behaves inconsistently
  • Fault returns immediately after clearing, or comes and goes when the seat is moved
  • Other restraint codes appear alongside it
  • Seat occupancy or belt reminder functions may act up on shared harnesses

Likely causes

  • Airbag connector under the seat not fully latched, or the connector position assurance clip not seated
  • Corroded or spread terminals in the squib connector, often after moisture reached the carpet
  • Harness damaged by the seat sliding fore and aft, pinching the loom against the rail or the floor bracket
  • Shorting bar inside the connector not releasing correctly when the plug is mated
  • Aftermarket seat covers, seat heaters or occupancy mats disturbing the airbag wiring
  • Failed inflator or squib inside the side airbag module itself
  • Repair after a previous deployment left the wrong part number or an untidy splice in the loop
  • Internal fault in the restraint control module (last item to consider)

How to fix it

  1. Disconnect the battery and wait for the manufacturer specified discharge time before working on any airbag circuit
  2. Never measure a squib with an ordinary ohmmeter, use only the approved restraint test equipment or the scan tool
  3. Confirm the manufacturer definition and the correct connector location for this application
  4. Unlatch, inspect and refit the connector under the seat, checking the shorting bar and the assurance clip
  5. Inspect the loom along the whole seat travel for pinch points, stretched wire and green corrosion
  6. Remove any aftermarket seat cover, heater or accessory that touches the airbag wiring
  7. Repair the harness properly with the correct terminals, splicing into airbag wiring is not acceptable on most designs
  8. If the loop still reads out of range with good wiring, replace the side airbag module, then clear and verify with a scan tool that the lamp completes a normal self test
