NVM Memory Failure

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Fix the power supply quality first, then attempt to rewrite the memory before condemning the module.

What does it mean?

B2143 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: UGDO Enable Control Circuit .

Symptoms

  • Personalised settings such as lighting, locking and comfort options reset at every key cycle
  • Programmable functions, including a universal garage door opener where fitted, cannot be stored
  • Remote key fobs lost from memory and need reprogramming
  • Module responds slowly or not at all to the scan tool
  • Lighting, locking or wiper functions behave erratically
  • The same code returns as soon as it is cleared

Likely causes

  • Low or unstable battery voltage while the module was writing to memory
  • Module programming or configuration interrupted part way through
  • Battery disconnected or a jump start performed while the module was still awake and writing
  • Voltage spike from welding, a bad charger or reversed jumper leads
  • Poor module power feed or ground, giving momentary supply dropouts
  • Water damage to the module or its connector, common on modules mounted low in the cabin
  • Genuine internal EEPROM failure after many write cycles
  • Software level not matching the vehicle after a module was swapped in from another car

How to fix it

  1. Test the battery state of charge and the charging system, memory faults are often just a voltage problem
  2. Measure module supply voltage and ground under load, look for a voltage drop
  3. Connect a stable maintainer, then clear the code and cycle the key to see whether it returns
  4. Read the current software and calibration level and compare it with what the vehicle should have
  5. Attempt a reprogram or a reconfiguration to the vehicle with the supply maintained throughout
  6. Restore the customer settings and reprogram the keys after the write completes
  7. Inspect the module and connector for water ingress if the fault persists
  8. Replace the module only if it still fails to hold memory after a successful reflash, then configure and program it to the vehicle
