Data Mismatch #2 (receive data does not match what was expected)

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Check the network health and the module identity before doing any wiring work.

What does it mean?

B2162 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Driver's MPCS Unit Lost Communication with Relay Control Module (RM Message) .

Symptoms

  • Several unrelated features stop working at the same time
  • Warning messages in the cluster that do not match any obvious mechanical fault
  • Scan tool reports a configuration mismatch or cannot read one module
  • Functions work intermittently and recover after a key cycle
  • Modules take a long time to wake up or respond
  • The same code returns immediately after clearing

Likely causes

  • Module fitted from another vehicle and never configured to this one
  • Software or calibration level that does not match the rest of the network
  • Configuration lost or corrupted after a failed programming attempt
  • Low or unstable battery voltage corrupting messages on the bus
  • Intermittent break, corrosion or a poor splice on the network wiring
  • Aftermarket device connected to the diagnostic connector or spliced into the bus
  • Terminating resistor or a bus junction connector at fault
  • The transmitting module, such as a relay control unit, sending incorrect data because it is itself faulty

How to fix it

  1. Test the battery and charging system, unstable voltage causes message errors on its own
  2. Scan every module and note which ones report communication or configuration faults
  3. Read part numbers and software levels and compare them with the build data for this vehicle
  4. Disconnect any aftermarket device from the diagnostic connector and the bus, then retest
  5. Inspect the network connectors and any splice points for corrosion and poor joints
  6. Measure the bus lines for correct resistance and for shorts to ground or battery
  7. Reconfigure or reprogram the module to the vehicle with a maintained supply
  8. If the message content is still wrong with a correctly configured module, replace the transmitting unit and configure it, then verify all affected functions
