What does it mean?

B2232 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Driver-side Air Bag Module (Inflator No.2) Circuit Resistance High .

Symptoms

  • Air bag warning lamp on and the driver air bag disabled.
  • The lamp goes on and off as the steering wheel is turned, which is typical of a failing clockspring.
  • Horn, cruise control or wheel mounted audio buttons stop working at the same time.
  • The second stage cannot deploy, so protection in a severe crash is reduced.
  • The code appears right after steering wheel removal, air bag refitting or column repair.

Likely causes

  • Air bag module connector not fully latched after steering wheel, horn or column work.
  • Broken conductor inside the clockspring ribbon, often after the column was disturbed or the wheel was fitted off centre.
  • Corroded terminals in the clockspring or air bag connector adding resistance to the loop.
  • Pushed back or spread terminal that makes only intermittent contact when the wheel is turned.
  • Broken or stretched wire in the column loom where it flexes with tilt and telescope adjustment.
  • Internal open in the driver air bag module inflator element.
  • Restraint control module loop drive fault.

How to fix it

  1. Disconnect the battery and wait the specified stand down time before touching the air bag or clockspring.
  2. Read the codes and check whether other column circuits such as horn or wheel switches also report faults.
  3. Unlatch and refit the driver air bag connector properly, checking the terminal lock and the yellow retaining clips, then retest.
  4. With the system safely disabled, measure the harness resistance from the restraint module connector to the air bag connector and compare both squib wires.
  5. Perform the measurement while slowly turning the wheel lock to lock so an intermittent break in the clockspring shows up.
  6. Replace the clockspring if the ribbon is broken or worn, centre it correctly on refitting and align the wheel to the specified position.
  7. Only after harness and clockspring test good, replace the driver air bag module, then clear the codes and confirm a clean self test.
