What does it mean?

B2233 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Passenger-side Air Bag Module (Inflator No.2) Circuit Resistance High .

Symptoms

  • Air bag warning lamp on and the passenger air bag deactivated.
  • The lamp may come and go over rough roads, indicating an intermittent connection.
  • The passenger air bag status indicator does not follow the occupancy state correctly.
  • Second stage deployment is not available in a severe impact.
  • The fault starts right after dash work or after a wet passenger carpet dried out.

Likely causes

  • Passenger air bag connector not fully seated or its lock not engaged after dash, glove box or windshield work.
  • Corroded terminals in the under dash connector, usually after a water leak into the passenger foot well.
  • Broken conductor in the dash harness where it is clipped over a bracket or passes behind the glove box.
  • Terminal pushed back in the connector so it only touches intermittently over bumps.
  • Internal open circuit in the passenger air bag module inflator element.
  • A replacement air bag or module with the wrong resistance specification for the vehicle.
  • Restraint control module loop drive fault.

How to fix it

  1. Disconnect the battery and wait the specified stand down time before opening any restraint connector.
  2. Read the codes and note whether the fault is current or intermittent and whether other under dash circuits are affected.
  3. Unplug, inspect and refit the passenger air bag connector, checking for corrosion, spread terminals and a properly engaged lock.
  4. With the module disconnected, measure the harness resistance and continuity from the restraint module connector to the air bag connector on both squib wires.
  5. Wiggle the dash loom and connector while watching the reading so a hidden break or bad terminal shows up.
  6. Repair broken wires with sealed crimps, replace damaged terminals and fix any water leak into the cabin.
  7. Replace the passenger air bag module only when the harness tests good, verifying the correct part number, then clear the codes and confirm a normal self test.
