What does it mean?
C1143 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: Steering Angle Sensor .
Symptoms
- Stability control and ABS lamps on, often with a message that the stability system is off
- Stability control cuts in on a straight, dry road for no obvious reason
- Scan tool shows an angle well away from zero while the wheel is held straight
- Steering assist behaviour changes on vehicles with speed sensitive steering
- Adaptive headlights and other steering linked features stop working
- Fault appears immediately after alignment or steering work
Likely causes
- Calibration lost after a battery disconnect, alignment, steering rack or column repair
- Worn or contaminated sensor disc giving skipped counts as the wheel turns
- Broken conductor in the clock spring that carries the sensor signal
- Sensor loose on the column, so its body moves with the steering wheel
- Corroded connector under the column shroud
- Play in the intermediate shaft or a mis-centred steering wheel after a repair
- Low supply voltage or a poor module ground disturbing the signal
How to fix it
- Park on level ground with the wheels straight and read the live steering angle, it should be near zero
- Turn the wheel slowly lock to lock while graphing the angle and look for steps or dropouts
- Confirm the steering wheel is centred and the front alignment is correct
- Inspect the clock spring connector and the wiring under the column shroud
- Check that the sensor is clamped tightly on the column and not slipping
- Verify supply voltage and ground at the sensor and check for network faults
- Perform the zero point calibration, and replace the sensor or clock spring assembly if the signal still jumps
