What does it mean?
C1176 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: ABS Hydraulic Valve Power Relay Circuit Open . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- ABS and stability control lamps light as soon as the ignition is turned on and never go out
- The ABS unit stays silent at key-on; there is no short valve test click or pump hum
- ABS never activates, so the wheels lock and the pedal stays firm during emergency braking
- Everyday braking feels completely normal, which hides the fault until a hard stop
- Traction control, hill-start assist and any electronic brake distribution features are unavailable
Likely causes
- High current ABS fuse blown, so the valve block gets no supply at all
- Relay coil or contact set open internally after years of switching
- Relay lifted or partly out of its socket following work in the fuse box
- Broken conductor inside an outwardly perfect looking wire, typically where the loom bends near the hydraulic unit
- Backed-out or corroded pin in the ABS module connector breaking the feed path
- Loose, painted over or corroded ground stud for the ABS hydraulic assembly
- Cracked solder joint or a burnt track on the ABS module circuit board at the power input
How to fix it
- Check every ABS related fuse with a meter, including the high current fuses in the underbonnet box
- Confirm the valve relay is the correct type and is pushed fully home, then substitute a known good identical relay if one is available
- Read all stored chassis codes; a whole group appearing at once tells you to chase the supply rather than individual valves
- Measure voltage at the relay socket with the ignition on to see whether power reaches the relay and whether the control side is switching
- Run a continuity test from the fuse box output to the ABS module connector, and check the ABS ground point for tightness and clean metal
- Inspect both halves of the module connector for water, corrosion and terminals that have pushed back out of the housing
- Repair the break or the terminal, and consider ABS module repair or replacement with coding only after the external circuit is proven good
