First step

Measure parasitic draw with the key off and touch the hydraulic unit after the car has sat; a warm unit and a drain both indicate a stuck live circuit

What does it mean?

C1178 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: ABS Hydraulic Valve Power Relay Circuit Short to Battery .

Symptoms

  • ABS lamp on, generally with the stability and traction control lamps and sometimes the red brake lamp
  • ABS is disabled and no wheel speed regulation occurs during hard braking
  • A faint hum or buzz from the ABS unit after the ignition is switched off
  • Battery going flat over a few days, or a measurable parasitic drain with everything switched off
  • ABS hydraulic unit noticeably warm after the car has been parked

Likely causes

  • Relay contacts welded shut, leaving the valve supply permanently live
  • Control or feedback wire chafed against a permanently powered cable inside the same loom
  • Water bridging live and control pins inside the fuse and relay box
  • Incorrect relay fitted or a relay swapped into the wrong slot during earlier fault finding
  • Aftermarket wiring, an alarm, a trailer electrics kit or an auxiliary light feed spliced into the ABS harness
  • Melted or fused insulation where the loom runs close to a hot exhaust component or a high current junction
  • ABS module output stage failed in a way that holds or misreads the circuit as high

How to fix it

  1. Measure parasitic draw with the key off and touch the hydraulic unit after the car has sat; a warm unit and a drain both indicate a stuck live circuit
  2. Read every chassis code — a group of short to battery codes together points at the shared supply rather than at individual valve coils
  3. Remove the relay, verify the correct part number and slot, and check the contacts for welding with a meter
  4. Inspect the relay box for water intrusion, corrosion and heat damage between adjacent live terminals
  5. With the relay out and the ABS module unplugged, check for voltage on the control wire; any voltage means an external feed is getting in
  6. Trace the loom for chafe against permanently live cables, and inspect all aftermarket splices in the engine bay
  7. Repair or reroute the wiring, replace a welded relay, and address the ABS module last, after the harness has been proven clean
