First step

Compare live wheel speeds from all four channels while rolling the car to confirm which one has dropped out

  • 2Chassis / ABS
  • 09Sequence number

What does it mean?

C1209 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: Wheel Speed Sensor Rear-RH Open/Short .

Symptoms

  • ABS, traction and stability control warning lamps on and staying on
  • ABS is disabled: the pedal stays firm and the rear axle can lock during hard braking
  • Rear right wheel speed reads a constant zero in live data while the other channels follow road speed
  • The car feels less stable when braking in a bend because stability control cannot regulate that wheel
  • Related warnings from hill-hold, electronic parking brake or trailer stability functions on some vehicles

Likely causes

  • Corroded or fractured sensor lead along the trailing arm or axle where it is exposed to salt spray
  • Sensor winding failed open or shorted internally
  • Cable rubbed through against the axle, a brake pipe, the spring seat or the handbrake cable
  • Water sitting in the connector inside the rear wheel arch, creating an open or a bridged circuit
  • Wire trapped, pinched or cut during previous rear brake, bearing or suspension work
  • Underbody damage from stones, kerbing, rodents or a badly routed exhaust heat shield
  • Fault in the ABS module input circuit for the rear right channel

How to fix it

  1. Compare live wheel speeds from all four channels while rolling the car to confirm which one has dropped out
  2. Inspect the rear right sensor lead along the trailing arm and axle for corrosion, chafe and previous repair joints
  3. Open the wheel arch connector, check for water and corrosion, and confirm the terminals are seated and latched
  4. Measure the circuit at the ABS module connector for an open or short, comparing it with the opposite rear channel
  5. With the module unplugged, test the circuit for a short to ground and to battery voltage
  6. Perform a wiggle test on the harness with live data displayed, concentrating on the section that moves with the suspension
  7. Repair the wiring or connector first, and replace the sensor only when the circuit is proven good and the sensor measures out of specification
